R-TYPE has the (dubious) honor of being the first game I wrote horror fanfiction for. It was not very well-done, but man, did I have an idea for a novel-length story and I had done all sorts of setup and planning and you name it I was putting my back into it. I knew it was just fanfiction, but I really wanted to finish a fanfic novel, even if it was for a game that nobody really played or cared much for the story.
The story I had been about to write was about a female pilot of the R-13 and what happened after they got trapped in the Bydo tree. I’d named her Tressa—but fast forward a couple years (I’d written about 200 pages on this story by that point) and IREM released the above information about the R-13. It was shocking—their story aligned almost exactly with the one I’d had planned, except they’d named the pilot Kayla and she’d ultimately ended up on the bad guy’s side (Tressa ended up, well, not on anyone’s side, but anyway).
I was both really happy that I’d “guessed” the plot so nearly accurately, and so discouraged about the similarities, I quit writing the fic. To this day it sits on my hard drive, unattended since 2003.
Maybe one day I’ll pick it up and dust it off, start from the beginning. I have some ideas for how to “fix” it so it’s both distinct and canonically accurate. But once again, who would read it? But it’s an idea that never really went away for me, so who knows…
ENOUGH ABOUT ME--I absolutely love your R-TYPE fan art. No one else seems to pay much artistic attention to this series, so it's really nice to find someone who's invested time in it. Carry on!
